Argentine Tango allows us to mingle with people that we otherwise wouldn’t, and to make friends with people who are different from us. On the dance floor, we keep company with those who hold vastly different political and religious views… but we see each other as people instead of “them.”
No guilt-mongering PSAs, sensationalized news stories, or patronizing slogans motivated us to spend time together. We’re not going into this seeking (or being forced) to understand each other’s differences.
We just want to be around others who love tango just as much as we do. And when we dance, whatever “tribal” identities we assign ourselves and others start mattering less.
Maybe tango won’t solve all of society’s problems, but its benefits are far-reaching in a world that desperately needs them.
