TANGO AS A COMMON LANGUAGE

We don’t need to understand tango song lyrics to figure out that they’re generally sad. But dancing tango won’t necessarily make us feel sad.

Nonetheless, the music is full of strong feelings. And as we get better at connecting our dancing to the songs, we’ll find the music affecting us more and more. Often we start looking inwards, becoming aware of the emotional complexity that comprises our individual experiences: joy and pain, disappointment and hope, good memories and bad… all intertwined. What we go through in our lives is unique to us, yet tango reminds us that we’re in it together.

This aspect of tango crosses cultures and transcends communicative barriers. As an unspoken universal language, there’s something about the dance which we all understand… and at the same time, something in tango that seems to understands us as well.
