Some people will pick up tango quickly. Perhaps they’re naturally coordinated, have some kind of previous athletic experience, or maybe they’re simply talented.
When I first started, I was definitely not talented. And if you’re like me, you’ll probably find tango more challenging as a beginner. Feeling awkward or clumsy isn’t particularly fun. But if we believe that having trouble in the beginning is an indicator of how tango is going to feel in the future, then we’re buying into a myth.
We don’t need to have a great start in order to become great dancers. We just have to start somewhere. Talented or not, what matters more is the effort and passion we put into the dance after we’ve made the decision to start at all.
