Good tango involves a lot of control, but not in the way that we may think.

Whether we’re leading or following, we can’t force our partners to always do what we want, or insist on determining where the next step should be. We need to let go and trust our partners, which I blogged about in a previous post.

Adding to that point, the extent to which we’re able to govern our own movements, balance, and thoughts (including self-criticism) also plays a huge part in our dance development. Wanting to take control is a natural impulse, and shouldn’t be suppressed. And as far as tango is concerned, the more we direct that impulse towards ourselves, the happier we’ll be.
